Douglas Ewart and Zimbabwe Nkenya come together for the first time in an improvisational evening of music and visual art. The sensual exploration is designed to stretch the aesthetic imaginations of audience members and performers alike.
Perhaps best known as past president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and instructor in the AACM School of Music, Ewart– work has been called &8220;death-defying improvisations combining master musicianship and acting – that the whole might be mistaken for the work of a small culture rather than one man.” He has performed throughout the world, including collaborations with Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill and others.
Zimbabwe Nkenya’s work on double bass has been described as “a choir of otherworldly voices and cries, resonant with double and triple stops, interspersed with muscular phrases articulated gracefully.” Nkenya has performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center, and the Knitting Factory, among other places, with some of the finest creative musicians in the world. The evening will feature solo and duo performance work and the visual art of both of these artistic masters.
